Why use a custom domain on Bluesky?

By default, your Bluesky handle looks like @you.bsky.social. By switching to a custom domain you control, your handle becomes @you.com — your own brand, not a subdomain of someone else's.

It also acts as soft verification. Because only the owner of the DNS records for a domain can prove control of it, a custom domain handle signals authenticity in a way that the default handle can't. Major news organisations and public figures use this to verify their accounts.

The change is fully reversible — your underlying account (your DID) stays the same, so all your followers, posts, and links remain intact. You can switch back to your original handle any time.

Frequently asked questions

Why use a custom domain on Bluesky?+

A custom domain makes your handle look like your own brand (e.g. @yourname.com instead of @yourname.bsky.social). It also acts as soft verification — only someone who controls the domain can claim the handle.

Do I lose my old handle?+

No. Your old @yourname.bsky.social handle becomes available again for someone else, but Bluesky also reserves it for a short period. Old links and mentions still work because they resolve to your DID, which never changes.

Does this tool store my domain or DID?+

No. Everything runs in your browser. We only call public Bluesky and DNS APIs to look up your DID and verify your TXT record — nothing is stored or sent to our servers.

How long does DNS verification take?+

Most registrars publish TXT records within 1–5 minutes. Some can take up to an hour. If verification fails, wait a few minutes and try again.

Can I use a subdomain like blog.example.com?+

Yes. Bluesky supports any domain you control, including subdomains. The TXT record name will be _atproto.blog.example.com instead.

Is this an official Bluesky tool?+

No, this is a free tool from SkyGrow that wraps the official Bluesky setup process into a single guided flow. Bluesky's own docs are linked at the bottom of this page.
