How handles work on Bluesky

Bluesky handles are domain names. The default looks like @you.bsky.social — a subdomain of bsky.social given to you when you sign up. You can also use any domain you control as your handle.

Default handles are first-come, first-served and can't be transferred. If the name you want on bsky.social is taken, the workaround is to register a custom domain and use that as your handle instead — gives you a stronger brand and stops you from being blocked by squatters.

Frequently asked questions

How does the checker work?+

We query Bluesky's public identity resolver for each handle. If the handle resolves to a DID, it's taken. If Bluesky returns a 'not found' response, it's available to register.

Do I need to add .bsky.social?+

No. If you enter a single word like 'alice', we check 'alice.bsky.social' for you. If you enter a full domain like 'alice.com', we check that exactly.

Can I use my own domain instead?+

Yes — Bluesky lets you use any domain you control as your handle. Use our custom-domain tool for a step-by-step setup.

Why are some handles 'taken' but inactive?+

Bluesky doesn't free up handles automatically when accounts go inactive. Once registered, the DID owns it. The only way to claim a taken handle is if the original account releases it or transfers the domain.

Is bulk checking rate-limited?+

We cap bulk checks at 25 handles per submission and stagger requests to stay polite to Bluesky's public API. All requests are made directly from your browser.
